Lost in the woods
::Captain Asad Qwillern couldn't see the forest for the trees. When he'd
been told the Xantara had a number of areas filled with vegetation, he'd
been sceptical to say the least. Now, however, surrounded by vegetation
taller them himself, he was, in short, lost. He knew the door was somewhere
behind the flowers and plants. He'd just keep looking. What would it be like
to have the chief of OPS call the bridge to say he was lost in the woods.
"I wish I had a place to sit down," he muttered.
Part of the wall he was near formed into a soft chair. Now Asad was really
spooked. Lost in the woods, chairs in walls, a bio-type ship - "If it talks
to me, I'm getting off right now," he said.
He looked around, but didn't hear a voice. He was taking a deep breath when
a voice said, "Captain?"
Asad almost jumped. The voice was coming from a bush nearby. He remembered
something like this from the Earth Bible.
"Yes?" he asked cautiously.
The bushes parted and one of his OPS officers stood there. "The bridge crew
is gathering, Sir. You asked me to let you know when people started to
appear."
"Thank you," Asad said. "I'll be going up there now. Have you gotten all
those reports in?"
"Most, Sir," came the reply.
Asad followed him through the bush and out the door.
::It was a short ride in the lift to the bridge. Asad stepped off the lift
and looked at the bridge. Several officers were at their stations, some were
engaged in conversation and he thought he saw the back of the colonel. Asad
went over to him. He'd had quite a few officers reporting for duty lately.::
"Colonel," Asad said coming to complete attention and giving a very proper
salute. "Plans for the welcome party are completed, Sir. All seems to be
functioning adequately."
Having made his report, Asad went directly to his station hoping to catch
glimpses of some of the other arrivals.
"Colonel," he said to his captain, "did you know this ship can make chairs
out of walls or do I need to report to sickbay?"
He gave the colonel a grin.
